Task 1: Research
In order to be an expert genetic counselor, you need to do a little research on a series of genetic disorders. You should use the guided notes to collect information from the selected websites found on the student resources tab to conduct your research.
Throughout this research, you will collect information about:
Throughout this research, you will collect information about:
- A general summary of the disorder.
- Is the disorder dominant or recessive?
- What symbols are used to complete a Punnett Square for this trait?
- How to complete a Punnett Square and determine the probabilities?
Task 2: Genetic Counselor
As the genetic counselor, you will collect information about your patients and determine the probability of a genetic disorder in their offspring. The information regarding the patients is found under the case studies tab. When looking at the case studies, be sure to click on YOUR group's case study to complete this task.
Using your guided notes:
Using your guided notes:
- collect information about your patients regarding whether the parents are homozygous dominant, heterozygous, or homozygous recessive
- complete a Punnett square for each of the 6 possible genetic disorders
- determine the probabilities of the offspring being normal/unaffected by the disorder, a carrier of the disorder, or affected by the disorder.
- select all disorders that the offspring has a chance of having (not a carrier, actually having the disorder), you will complete task 3 regarding this genetic disorder
Task 3: Educational Materials
After you have completed the genetic testing for the patients, you must share information regarding the potential disorders with the patients. You will complete this task with ALL of the disorders the offspring has a chance to have (discovered in Task 2). You should include summary of the disease, symptoms, cause, inheritance, treatments, and prognosis (how long will live, how life will be different, etc.). Remember, there is information about each disorder on the student resources page.
You may choose any media to share the information with the parents. The following are options of media you may use for the completion of this task:
After you have created your educational materials, your instructor will select ONE of your disorders for you to present your educational materials at a genetic counselor's conference.
